« Seriously? Two More NES World Championship Carts Pop Up On Ebay. | Main | Child's Play Dinner Auction 2008 »
After a long night of rocking, drinking, donating and giveaways, Pinkapalooza 2 came to a close after bags and bags of money were collected for Child's Play. Lots of gamers came out to show their support and had a great time rocking out with the PG crew and all those in attendance. Even with all the festivities taking place, it was still all about the kids. All of the great prizes that were donated from Microsoft, The Behemoth, Harmonix, Nintendo, Insomniac Games and even Pink Gorilla were raffled off or given away to gamers looking to have a good time while helping out a great cause. Thanks to everyone who came out and had a great time hanging out, playing a little Rock Band 2, or even just watching the show. For those who missed last year show as well, take a quick look at last year's wrapup, to get better acquainted with how it all works.
The night began as the PG crew made its way to the Nectar Lounge in Fremont, hauling in the tiny plastic instruments just as they did last year, but this year there were real instruments as well! As PG was setting up Rock Band 2 for the event, The Open Blue arrived early to prep their gear and help get things set up. Along side the Rock Band drums was a real drum set, alongside the Rock Band Guitars were, you guessed it, real guitars. Before long Fighter X and Leeni showed up to prep their gear, making sure that their were subtle reminders of game music from the good old 8 bit days, played on their Gameboy's. Hit the jump for a full recap, now with moving pictures!
As bands started pouring in and getting over their cold feet about playing on stage, PG's Master of Ceremonies broke down Child's Play for those unaware, while also filling everyone in on the nights events. To get things started a couple of raffle drawings were made and a few lucky gamers look home some great Xbox 360 games donated by Microsoft (Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Halo 3, Viva Pinata, Scene it? Box Office Smash just to name a few) and the crowd stared in awe at the Wii and Mario Kart donated by Nintendo. Two of the more rare prizes included a signed copy of Resistance 2 and a disc copy of Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty was never made available for sale in the US donated by Insomniac games. The real prize up for grabs was the autographed Rock Band 2 Special Edition Xbox 360 set signed by Harmonix for the winner of the Rock Band 2 score contest that was the nights main event. The contest rules were simple; play a song and compare it to the World Record Score online and the band with the highest ratio wins. With the stage set for the nights event, Pinky and the Gorilla's started off by rocking out to the Red Hot Chili Peppers "Give it Away" and put of a respectable score of 1.1 million and some change. As the night went on the performances kept getting better and better. Some highlights included Wil Wheaton, Penny Arcade's Robert Khoo and the guys from Harmonix rocking out on stage.
Then Scott Kurtz talked some more of the Penny Arcade crew into rocking with him on stage:
MC 117 returned with a fully costumed band and rocked the house:
To start off the night's three musical performances, Leeni started off with songs from her new album, Labyrinth, that was just released.
About an hour later Fighter X took the stage and rocked the house getting everyone up on their feet and dancing to the music.
Last but certainly not least, the Open Blue took the stage to finish off the nights musical performances and played a special song from Kirby for everyone to hear. That drummer looks sort of familiar....where have we seen him before?
After the Open Blue showed off their skills, it was right back to the contest to determine who would take home the coveted Harmonix signed Rock Band 2 set. Band after band took the stage to try and put up a high score to get them in competition for the final two bands. As the contest drew to a close it was clear the final two bands would be "Free Waffles" and "The Brock Samson's" who would have to play Coheed & Cambria's "Welcome Home" in a one on one duel to the finish! Free Waffles took the stage first and put up a very respectable score of 1,511,205 and challenged their rivals to beat their high score. Next up the Brock Samson's took to the stage and rocked their hearts out defeating Free Waffles with an impressive score of 1,954,891 taking home the autographed Rock Band 2 Special Edition Xbox 360 set signed by Harmonix!
Pink Gorilla would like to thank everyone who helped make the night a huge success; Microsoft, The Behemoth, Harmonix, Nintendo, Penny Arcade, Insomniac Games Leeni, Fighter X, The Open Blue, Crunchy Records the guys at Nectar, Corey Lewis for the awesome flyer and of course thanks to our great MC for the night, Paublo! Of course PG would also like to thank all those who showed up and donated making the night worth it by donating to Child's Play. Remember it's not too late! Even if you couldn't make it down to Pinkapalooza 2, head over to the Child's Play website to donate online, every gift makes a difference! In the end over $1600 was raised for Child's Play which will no doubt be put to good use in hospitals all over the world.
Kristjan, why so serious?
Leeni traded her Gameboy for a guitar to rock out with the band!
PaRappa the Rocker insisted he doesn't have a new game coming out where he trades his turntables for guitars!

Hope my contribution found a good home. I wish I was there to shred faces with you guys, but there are graphics that needed to be tightened up.

Awesome show. I won a raffle with cool Mario plushies. Thanks!
You guys should have judges for the RB contest and factor in style/stage presence next time, not just score! (maybe count style as 25% and score as 75%)
