They came, they danced and in the end a winner was crowned, but the main focus was having fun playing DDR. Pink Gorilla would like to thank all those who came out and had a goodtime competing in the tournament or even just watching the festivities.

After almost a staggering 7 hours, the tourney came to a close and the winner walked off with $14 in cash, a Pinky G plushie, a PG poster and a $25 Pink Gorilla Gift Certificate as well as knowing that all the practice had paid off. Hit the jump for a recap with pics and video from the event!

Usually when something new and exciting comes in to one of our stores, we'll put up a little blurb about it up in that update box near the top of the page.
So instead, we took a few pictures of some of the neat new stuff we've gotten in. Hit the jump for some tasty eye candy (and try not to make too much fun of us for our substandard photography skills, camerawork is hard!).

Pinkapalooza 3 Wrap up: It's All For The Kids!

Lots of gamers came out and supported Child's Play by donating to Pink Gorilla's annual raffle of games, toys and plushies, and some even took home some of the years hottest games like Brutal Legend, Left 4 Dead 2 and Demon's Souls to name a few. Thanks to all the gamers who came out and supported the event by donating, rocking out on stage or by supporting the events musical acts.

The night began as the PG crew made its way to the Nectar Lounge in Fremont, hauling the plastic instruments just as they did in years past for Pinkapalooza 1 and 2. This year brought out all new musical acts along with old favorite Rock Band 2 and after a few mic problems were fixed the night went off with out a hitch.

After the dust settled, the bar closed and the last few straglers stumbled out, the tally was in; over $1000 was raised for Penny Arcade's Child's Play Charity making the night a sucess. Thanks to all those who came out! Hit the jump for a full recap with pics from the nights events!

Too Hot for the USA? Devil World: An Inside Look, Part One

Devil World is simply a great game. Not only is it fun to play, but the gameplay is varied enough from other maze games (Pac man and KC Munchkin to name a few) that the game isn't repetitive. Even the music is catchy, composed by Koji Kondo, who also composed legendary game themes like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. The other creative forced behind the game; Shigeru Miyamoto, the celebrated Nintendo game designer behind titles like Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, and the Legend of Zelda and you’ve got the potential for a hit. To top it all off, the game is almost entirely in English, making localization almost non existent, so why did the game never come over to the US?

Devil World for the Famicom (NES in the US) is the only game designed by Shigeru Miyamoto to never be released in the US. While most gamers know all of his other games, Devil World was just too controversial in the 1980’s to release in the US. Why? For starters, the gameplay revolves around a small green dragon named Tamagon attacking the Devil’s World by picking up crosses to gain the ability to breathe fire and then eat the dots in the maze. As if that wasn’t enough, after completing a maze, the stage reappears where Tamagon must collect four Bibles and place them in the center of the maze.

The overt religious icons in Devil World were strictly against Nintendo of America’s policy at the time and rightly so. Games like Custer’s Revenge caused huge controversy with women especially, which Nintendo of America wanted to avoid. In later years, games like Night Trap for the Sega CD would end up as front page news, even getting the US Senate involved in an effort to ban the game.

Hit the jump for an in depth look at Devil World’s gameplay, music and the politics behind why it has never been released stateside.

Pink Gorilla University District Construction Update #2

After a busy couple weeks, PG #2 or PGUD (Pink Gorilla University District) is finally ready for business. While the store is FAR from complete, the space has at least been decked out with pink and green, plus it even has a few hundred games hanging from the walls. With over 2000 sq. ft., the store is so huge the Elders decided to put in an arcade in the back of the store, starting off with eight classic games and two pinball machines. While there are only 7 arcade cabs in the picture to the side, more arcade machines will be in place very soon. So far the PGUD arcade has Baby Pac man (hybrid game with pinball down below and video up top) Ms. Pac man, Wizard of Wor, Robotron, Soul Edge, Gorf and Asteroids. The walls have plenty of NES, SNES, Famicom, Super Famicom, a few Genesis and Master System games, lots of Saturn and Dreamcast games, PC Engine/Turbografx 16 games and lots more. Hit the jump for an in depth look at the new space, with lots of pics of the new space!

Move over Powerfest '94, Nintendo Campus Challenge '91 is here!

With the economy still on a downturn, collectors everywhere are facing hard times. 2008 and 2009 have brought a whole slew of ultra rare US and Japanese games up for auction on the internet. Japanese auction sites saw not one but two super rare titles this year, Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match: Championship Commemorative Gold Edition and The Gentle Physics and Science of Hazardous Materials which went for $10,023 and $4,213 USD respectively.

In the US, eBay has seen 3 copies of the NES World Championship Cart, the Gold version of which sold for $17,500! Then throw in that Stadium Events for the NES still sold for a respectable $4,260 and you've got a firesale on retro video games going on! While the self proclaimed 'rarest game ever' PowerFest 1994 never sold after being posted twice with an asking price of $50,000, maybe the recently completed auction of a Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991 cart will see the PowerFest 1994 cart return for a third time at a lower price.

The Nintendo Campus Challenge cart is probably just as rare as PowerFest 1994 as one of each has only ever been found. The Campus Challenge cart was found in 2006 and finally made its way to ebay eariler this year. The cart was part of a contest that Nintendo held in 1991 at college campuses across the US and sold for the staggering price of $20,100! Hit the jump for the full scoop on the Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991 cart for the NES, pics included!
