PG witnessed the DS Lite mayhem first-hand. Retailers are sold out; recycle shops are asking $400 a pop. In fact, the DS system is so damn hot in Japan that stores are selling original DS systems for over $200, and will buy them back at full retail price.
It looks like Nintendo is weeks if not months out from being able to meet the overwhelming demand for its new slimmer redesigned DS, dubbed the DS Lite.
Hearing that the DS Lite was in short supply, Pink Gorilla went intercontinental in hopes of scooping up as many units as possible for the Pinky G faithful.
Pinky G's plane touched down in Tokyo the morning of the launch. Giddy from jet lag and full of adrenaline as our train approached Akihabara, the retail electronics district of Tokyo, we spotted a posting from Nintendo in the train. Loosely translated, it read: "Dear Customers, we've only been able to manufacture 450,000 units for launch. We apologize for not having more ready." Not a good sign, we thought.
When we arrived at Akihabara 2 hours before the launch, there were already 450,000 people there ahead of us. When stores opened, the DS Lites disappeared in seconds. Apparently, most stores had only 5 units or less. Even the large super chains like Sofmap had less than 20 units at their disposal.

This DS Lite display was just a teaser with empty boxes.
