Move over Powerfest '94, Nintendo Campus Challenge '91 is here!

With the economy still on a downturn, collectors everywhere are facing hard times. 2008 and 2009 have brought a whole slew of ultra rare US and Japanese games up for auction on the internet. Japanese auction sites saw not one but two super rare titles this year, Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match: Championship Commemorative Gold Edition and The Gentle Physics and Science of Hazardous Materials which went for $10,023 and $4,213 USD respectively.

In the US, eBay has seen 3 copies of the NES World Championship Cart, the Gold version of which sold for $17,500! Then throw in that Stadium Events for the NES still sold for a respectable $4,260 and you've got a firesale on retro video games going on! While the self proclaimed 'rarest game ever' PowerFest 1994 never sold after being posted twice with an asking price of $50,000, maybe the recently completed auction of a Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991 cart will see the PowerFest 1994 cart return for a third time at a lower price.

The Nintendo Campus Challenge cart is probably just as rare as PowerFest 1994 as one of each has only ever been found. The Campus Challenge cart was found in 2006 and finally made its way to ebay eariler this year. The cart was part of a contest that Nintendo held in 1991 at college campuses across the US and sold for the staggering price of $20,100! Hit the jump for the full scoop on the Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991 cart for the NES, pics included!

Much like the PowerFest 1994 cart, the Nintendo Campus Challenge cart was created for a Nintendo Competition in 1991 on 58 college campuses across the US. Low and behold in 2006, an extremely lucky collector happened to find the Campus Challenge cart at a garage sale in New York! The cart was listed on Ebay once before in July 2009 and sold for $14,000 and now just a few months later gains $6,000 in value! That's right the Nintendo Campus Challenge cart sold for the record price of $20,100 just a few short hours ago. Take a quick look at what $20,100 will get you:

Not as slick looking as the Gold NWC Cart, but its worth a little more.

The Nintendo Campus Challenge Cart in all its glory.

    It even works!

The Nintendo Campus Challenge event had players compete by playing 3 mini-games; collecting 25 coins in Super Mario Brothers 3, then a shortened version of PinBot where the goal is to get 100,000 points to move on. The last mini-game is Dr. Mario which the player must try to get a high score before the time runs out. Sounds simple enough right? Well, the player had only 6 minutes and 21 seconds to try and get a high score! At the end of the round the score broke down by taking the players Super Mario Bros. score times 10 which was added to their PinBot score and finally their Dr. Mario score was times 100. While the cart it self doesn't sound all that fun to play, the collectors value just keeps seeming to rise. The cart will only play on a regualr retail NES, but the top cover of the system must be removed to account for the long size of the Nintendo Campus Challenge cart compared to a standard retail game. The cart also requires two controllers; the first players' controller controls the game and the second players' contoller activates the 6 minute and 21 second timer by hitiing 'start' to get things rolling.
