In the first parts of our video game commercials series, we took a look at some bizarre ads from America and Japan.
But those aren't the only countries where gaming is popular. People all over the world, from Europe to South America to Austrailia enjoy the hobby. And much like an invasive parasite, advertising follows gaming wherever it spreads.
Join us below the fold for part three of our continuing series as we travel the globe to find strange and interesting gaming ads.
Our first discovery comes from South Korea with an ad for the Hyundai Comboy.
What is the Hyundai Comboy, you ask? The Comboy was the Korean version of the NES. Because of lingering anger at Japan due to World War 2, Korea had banned the import of Japanese cultural products, including video games. Nintendo got around the ban by licensing the NES to a third party which would distribute the console in Korea.
This particular Comboy ad may look a little familiar....
Holy ripoff, Mario! Hyundai borrows quite liberally from the world famous Link to the Past commercial to make their ad. In the Comboy version, all the big Nintendo characters get together to make a cover of the earlier Zelda song.
Our next entry is from India, one of gaming's emerging markets, for the Xbox360.
Last year, Microsoft became the first company to release a next-gen console in the world's second most populous country. Despite it's huge price tag (19,900 rupees, or about $450) it has sold well and is the one market where Microsoft is winning the console war.
So what kind of awesome advertisement did Microsoft cook up to celebrate the launching of the 360 in India?
We're not quite sure what's going on there, but for some reason, we really want an Xbox all of the sudden. Microsoft really captured the spirit of Bollywood with this piece, despite the fact that the console itself only gets about 3 seconds of airtime.
It's really a shame that India is only now getting into video games. One can only imagine what kind of crazy ads would have come out of there during the NES era, the golden age of bizarre game commercials.
Our next commercial comes from England and is for Ape Escape for the PS2.
Ape Escape was an interesting series of games that involved capturing super-smart monkeys. The games were known for their then-innovative use of analog controls. The original Ape Escape was the very first game to utilized the Playstation's Dual Shock analog controller.
Commercials for the Ape Escape series featured people in giant monkey suits running around and causing trouble. And as any good advertiser knows, giant monkeys equals comedy gold. The following ad features not only giant monkeys, but a very famous co-star....
Poor George Bush, those monkeys just won't leave him alone. The British advertisers poked a little fun at our President's eternal struggle against the evil apes in this commercial. It's not suprising that this particular ad never made it to this side of the Atlantic.
Special Bonus Ad!- Super Mario Bos!
Although it isn't an ad for any game or console, this video is pretty interesting.
In a recent election in the Netherlands, the dutch Labour Party and their leader, Wouter Bos, were featured in an internet ad starring Bos in place of Mario. Super Mario's mushrooms were replaced by the Party's emblem and instead of saving the princess, the hero gave people jobs and destroyed banks.
We know who we're voting for in the next Dutch elections!
That's all for this version of the Video Game Commercials Hall of Fame. Join us next time as we continue to unearth buried advertising treasures.
