    Panzer Dragoon Saga for Saturn

pds_cover.jpgThe mother of all Saturn games finds its way to Pink Gorilla's shelves again. Rumored to be fewer than 5,000 copies in existence, the shelves of Pink Gorilla are graced with a brand new and sealed copy of the supreme collector's treasure. How many sealed copies exist? Hard to say, but we've had two sealed copies pass through our doors.

If you know your Saturn games, you know that Panzer Dragoon Saga is considered to be the greatest RPG ever for a Sega system. The four disc epic tells the story of Edge and his mystical dragon. PDS maximizes the Saturn's capabilities with overhead views of majestic lands and seemingly endless seas- truly amazing graphics. The coolest part of the game is that the characters speak in a tongue all their own...pds2.jpg

The plot: Edge, a young man works for the Empire at a mountain excavation. While digging, Edge discovers a mysterious woman encased in stone. Just as soon as she's out of the ground, Empire goons show up, snag the girl, and shoot Edge, knocking him down a mine shaft.

Surprised to be alive, Edge regains conciousness, befriends a dragon who saves Edge from a horde of angry monsters, and embarks on his quest to find the girl and take his revenge on the Empire. With the semi-clichéd beginning to the journey over, things get interesting quickly. The plot has twists and turns a-plenty to make for truly cool story telling. Over the course of his journey, and on his way to racking up some serious frequent flyer miles, Edge and his dragon encounter numerous friends and enemies, discover the Empire's true intentions, eat 42,823 powerbars and drink 62,212 gallons of gatorade, and well just for sake of completeness, save the world.

Not only is the story amazing, the battle system makes the Saga a true gem. Once Edge and his dragon engage the enemy, a meter begins to charge. Each attack reduces the charge. Edge's gun and the dragon's laser both take off a third. Special magic attacks, called Berserk attacks, take off two-thirds. Radar guides the player through battles and helps the player decide when to attack. The more efficiently you eliminate your enemy in a battle, the more Experience Points you gain. You can specify how much agility, defense, attack, and spirit to power up. Spirit determines the strength of your Berserk attack.

The only down-side of the game is that it's a bit easy. Yet, with a truly rich and dope plot, arguably the best graphics of any Saturn game, and a tight production run in the twilight of the Saturn's life, it's easy to see why Panzer Dragoon Saga is a true collector's gem.

P.S. It's interesting to note that the Japanese version is not nearly as rare as its American counterpart.
